laundry day….

Could someone please bottle the scent of “antique French waffle weave towels drying in the Mediterranean sun” for me? Because it’s a fragrance I really just don’t want to ever have to live without.

Most every Monday, you’ll find me haunting the aisles of Le Cours Salaya marketplace in the old part of Nice. Most days, these hallowed halls are devoted to produce & flowers, but on Monday, it’s all about antiques. While I’m always seeking something unique and special, I am also working to build on certain collections I want to have in my homes.
Fringed white waffle weave towels {for kitchen or bath} are on my list. I found these three towels in the bottom of a musty old box filled with once cherished, then forgotten, French linens. They were yellowed and quite dark on the folded edges, but I knew I could probably clean them up, and I think all 3 cost me less than 6 euros {I bought them with a number of other pieces}, so I was more than willing to take the risk.
After washing them in hot water, I smoothed them out flat on a table. Within a few hours in the sun they were crisp, fresh, white and ready to be added to the stack in the kitchen.

  • Well done! Ah, le Cours Saleya. All my mornings in Nice start there, with some coffee and a croissant… Can't wait to return to my rental apartment in the Old Town next year… Enjoy for the both of us! Veronique (French Girl in Seattle)

  • Miss Emily….WE can help bottle that scent!!! First question, what detergent are you using to cleanse the towels? This scent, in addition to the marine algae and saltwater infused air is giving you that heavenly fragrance embedded in your crisp towels. I'm transported thinking about it!

  • Shelley, that is so funny, I was going to send you this post. Actually this detergent is amazing, it makes everything smell so fresh. It's dark now, and the laundry room is outside so I'm too chicken to venture out, but I will get you the information. Honestly, I could sit and smell those towels for hours. Good to hear from you. xoxo ebb
