Our family had a splendid little getaway at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club recently. It was great to leave our boots behind, dust off the flip flops, polish our toes and escape to the land of sunshine, palm trees, and that beach. Driving in, we were welcomed by expansive grounds, lined with palm trees and flocks of fowl.
I was thrilled that Mr. Splendid was able to secure the coveted room #237 for the family, it juts right out on the beach, with windows all around, so you are a part of all of the beach action from morning to night, even if you’re still in your pj’s {it’s the room at the tip of the “L”, in the photo below, the room furthest to the left}. One of the best intrinsic benefits of this room is SLEEP, each night, the gentle roar of the ocean lulled us all into states of gorgeous, glorious, deep, restful sleep.
Let me tell you, I don’t think I have ever seen a more active beach, massive teams of swimmers, scuba divers, snorkelers, kayakers, surfers and SUP’ers {stand up paddle boarders} made the most these waves from sunrise to well past sunset. Local outfitters on the Avenida de la Playa {right next to the club} provided all of the equipment one needed to enjoy these sports, at very reasonable prices. The rooms are simply furnished, they are not going to win any design awards…think basic beach cabin decor. But, what the rooms lack in style, they make up for in locale and amenities.
Back in the club, guests can enjoy time by the pool, lots of tennis {including great tennis clinics, Cardio Tennis with Nelson is my favorite}, and a great little 9-hole golf course, available all day long. But, beware, the course is strictly patrolled by the guy in the photo below. We didn’t brave the onsite restaurants, but they are available.
If the Avenida de la Playa and LBTC aren’t enough, there are many more things to do nearby. The village of La Jolla offers wonderful shopping opportunities and a wide array of restaurants {my restaurant write-up is coming up next}.
A little further down the road {20 minutes??) is Mission Bay, where you can get out on the water in any kind of boat or a jet ski. For rental information click on Seaforth. If you’re so inclined, Sea World is right on Mission Bay as well.
In my next post, I’ll do a write-up on the restaurants we tried. We had many marvelous meals, but I think my favorite dinner was our beach barbecue. The beach services crew at the LBTC make it easy for you to have a sunset dinner right on the beach {and much more}, barbeque’s, fireplaces, tables and chairs can be set up right outside your room. They will also set up a beach volleyball court. You can order food from the restaurant, or buy it yourself in nearby La Jolla.
Nothing fancy, just you, your family and friends, a simple dinner, the roar of the ocean, the sunset, a warm fire, salty air,
and pure, lovely, barefoot bliss.
