Our weather enticed a number of my neighbors outlandishly gorgeous tree peony blossoms to open.
I believe this bush was planted just three years ago and this year it has 36 buds and blooms, the “tree” is about 4 feet high now and just as wide.
Last year, it had half that many flowers, but as soon as I saw just one of them there was no doubt that they would become a part of my grand garden scheme. I’ve already planted one, a Meikouhou, which has a pale touch of raspberry in the center.
But, I’d also like to grow one of these, please.
Now that this one has bloomed, I’m on a hunt, I’ve been doing some research and believe this is a Yu ban bai , a variety that has been cultivated in China for over a thousand years. Click on Jade Plate White {the literal translation} to read a sweet little legend about this flower and Peony faries. It’s also possible this may be a Godaishu, please share your thoughts if you are “in the know”.
Tree Peonies have been grown in Asia for centuries and are becoming more and more available in the US and Europe. They are sought after because they grow on thick wood branches which can stand up to wind and rains and the massive, yet delicate blossoms are 6 – 9 inches across.
It’s not unusual for a mature tree/bush to produce up to 100 of these incredible blooms, need I say more?

Hi Emily, I had a couple peonies planted on our other property (we have moved and are in the process of construction and the landscape is being revised) and they were very slow to bloom. This is such a gorgeous flower (all varieties) and I will plant them on the new property. 100 blooms?! I've never seen that! Enjoy the lovely day and weekend ahead.
I love your peonies! Wow..knock your socks off ones! I am intrigued with this "tree" type of peony…but here in Chicago I'm wondering if it would be hardy enough? My peonies haven't even sent up green sprouts yet! We are having a very cool spring and things are delayed. I love the scent of peonies; do these tree versions also have scent? I always giggle that they call peonies the poor man's rose. I almost enjoy peonies more except they tend to droop on the ground from the weight of the flowers. Have a great day! Susan in Chicago
